What is a Cenotaph?

In many cemeteries and memorial parks, you may come across a monument with no burial beneath it. These special markers are called cenotaphs—a word that means “empty tomb.” A cenotaph is a monument erected to honor someone whose physical remains are located elsewhere. Sometimes, it’s because a body was never recovered—such as in the case of soldiers lost in battle, loved ones lost at sea, or individuals who chose to be cremated and have their ashes scattered. Other times, it’s simply a way for families to have a place close to home where they can come to remember and reflect. Though there may be no burial beneath, the emotions and memories tied to a cenotaph are just as real. These monuments serve as sacred spaces where legacies are honored, grief is expressed, and love lives on. Whether simple or elaborate, a cenotaph is a powerful way to say: You are not forgotten.
